Hello,

Some of you, who are unfamiliar with Windows 8, or who enjoyed the Windows start-up sound, under Windows 7, may wonder if there is a method to resolve this issue, thereby hearing the sound everytime the computer starts. Follow this simple tutorial to enable the Windows start-up sound on 8 or 8.1 (all versions.)

1. First, if you are new to the Windows 8 interface, it may help you to download a utility called Classic Shell. Basically, this free utility converts your Windows 8 start menu into a Windows 7 style, complete with the Search box. Visit, www.classicshell.net. Choose download, then press alt + N, then choose run.
2. Once you have downloaded, run the installation, and have configured your start menu (press the windows key after installation to configure your start menu.), it is time to press your Windows key, then, while on the search box, type in Change what the power buttons do.
3. From here, you use tab with Jaws until you hear an option called change settings that are currently unavailable. You should then see or hear a box, after choosing the change settings that are currently unavailable, called use windows fast start-up. You should hit the spacebar at this point to deselect this option.
4. Next, choose save options, then press the key combination Alt + F4 to exit.
5. Now, press the Windows key once again; at this point, you will need to type either "Sounds" or "Change System sounds", either will work.
6. Now you should be on the Sound Schemes page; check or select with the spacebar the box that says, play Windows start-up sound.
7. Use Alt +A for apply, tab over to it, and then, hit okay.
8. Restart your computer. Now you will hear the sound everytime your computer restarts, or if you are first turning it on from it being completely shut down.

Hope this helps anyone. Windows fast start-up is a way for your computer to start faster, by having Windows save a part of your profile, in other words, it is in a constant sleep mode. This can interfere with Jaws I noticed on some laptops, as it does not always talk to you at the log in screen. Disabling this option has fixed it for me, plus it's nice to hear the sound. I hope you have found this brief tutorial helpful.

Actyually, you do not have to disable fast start for that to work. You will get the windows startup if you simply check that box to hear it, I have fast boot enabled and always hear windows startup.

That's interesting, because when I just checked the sound,, I would never get the Windows start up sound when turning the computer on, only when restarting it.
